The Perks of Probiotic

What is Probiotic?

Probiotics are cultures of good live microorganisms which, after ingestion, can lead to health benefits and other positive outcomes for the animal or human consuming them.

Probiotic use in animal nutrition is widely accepted today. Rapid advancements in molecular biology and gene sequencing are helping researchers dig deep on finding new probiotic applications for animals, including in feed and consumer-packaged health products for companion pets.

Probiotics are increasingly being added to commercial animal feed for cattle and poultry to alter the gastrointestinal flora and overall animal. Over the last decade or so, there has been a significant rise in the adoption of probiotics in animal feed for farm animals like swine, cattle, horses, ruminants, and poultry. Using probiotics in cattle feed has shown beneficial results in terms of animal performance, digestion, and the immune system.

The concept of using “good” microorganisms for beneficial outcomes is not new. Probiotic organisms have been used in the food industry for a long time. E.g., yeasts to produce beer or bacterial cultures to make cheese and yogurt. Such food cultures, besides being crucial in food production, also benefit the person eating them.

The Perks of Probiotic

When to use Probiotics?

Animals experience digestive upset and reduced appetite when the natural balance of beneficial bacteria in the digestive system has been disrupted. The number of pathogens increases while the number of beneficial organisms decreases, causing digestive upsets, including diarrhea, constipation, and discomfort. Probiotics help maintain the average microbial balance in the gut and support the overall health of the animal. Probiotics may help keep a healthy appetite and digestion during:
